Bark mulch provides much more than just an attractive surface layer. It plays a crucial role in your landscape ecosystem, supporting your plants' growth while keeping your garden looking vibrant and tidy.
Bark mulch creates a protective barrier over the soil, reducing surface evaporation. In the dry summer months of Moses Lake, this moisture retention is especially critical to help your plants stay hydrated and resilient.
A thick layer of bark mulch blocks sunlight from reaching weed seeds, drastically reducing their ability to sprout and take root. This keeps your landscape cleaner with less maintenance.
Bark mulch acts as insulation, protecting roots from extreme heat in the summer and cold temperatures in the winter. This stable environment promotes healthy root development year-round.
As organic bark mulch decomposes, it enriches the soil with valuable nutrients. This natural process boosts soil fertility and structure, supporting long-term plant health.
Freshly applied bark mulch gives garden beds, tree bases, and pathways a polished, uniform look. This instantly boosts your property's aesthetics and can even increase its market value.

Depth times area, and the number people get wrong is depth. Three inches is the working figure for a planting bed, which comes out to about one cubic yard per 100 square feet. Less than two inches and weeds come straight through. More than four and you start holding water against plant crowns. We measure the beds and give you a yardage rather than having you guess at the garden center.
Fine-ground bark does. The Columbia Basin gets enough wind that shredded or fine bark on an exposed bed will migrate into your lawn by August. Medium and large nugget bark stays put much better because the pieces knit together. On the windiest properties we will suggest rock for the exposed side of the house and keep bark for sheltered beds.
Every two to three years for most Moses Lake properties. It breaks down into the soil, which is part of the point, so the layer thins rather than disappearing. You are usually adding an inch rather than starting over. Color fades faster than the material breaks down, so some people top up sooner purely for looks.
For bark, usually not, and often it makes things worse. Bark decomposes into a soil layer on top of the fabric and weeds root in that anyway, so you end up with weeds you cannot pull properly because the roots are tangled in the fabric. Fabric earns its place under rock, which does not break down. Under bark we would rather lay it thick enough to do the job.
